The whole Chochołów is a historic town with beautiful, wooden buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, characteristic of the Podhale style. It is called the Living Open-Air Museum of Regional Construction because most of the historic cottages are inhabited. Visiting the Chochołów Open Air Museum is a walk through a real, living village maintained in a beautiful style and protected by conservators. You can feel here as if it went back 100-200 years in time. There is also a church from the 19th century in Chochołów, with wooden altars and a wooden painting of the Mother of God moved from the old chapel built in the 17th century. Hand-carved souvenirs can be bought in the Regional Chamber.
The village also has an interesting history, it became famous during the so-called Chochołowski Uprising, called by the highlanders the “chochołowski movement”. This is the most famous uprising of the people of Podhale to fight for independence (1846). The Museum of the Chochołowski Uprising is located in the oldest cottage, dating from 1798, once owned by Jan Bafia. This is a hut that can be entered. Inside, there are many memorabilia of the uprising, as well as an exhibition presenting its history. There is also an ethnographic exhibition presenting the life of highlanders in the 19th century.
