There are as many as five mounds in Krakow! The Piłsudski Mound is the highest and the most difficult to access of all. However, it is worth getting here. It is built on the top of Sowiniec, in the Wolski Forest, in the Bielańsko-Tyniecki Landscape Park. From the top, there are beautiful views of the park, the city, the Vistula River and its surroundings. Its total height is 35 m. There are gentle paths leading to the top, winding around the mound. To reach them, you have to take a walk along the forest paths of Las Wolski leading from the vicinity of the Zoo, Kasztanowa Avenue or Zakamycze Street.
The construction of the mound began on August 6, 1934, and was completed three years later. It was supposed to be a monument to the nation's fight for independence. When Józef Piłsudski died in 1935, the mound was named after him, after all, he was the commander of the Polish Legions fighting for independence and the leader of the reborn nation. The mound was made from the ground from all the battlefields of World War I and national uprisings where Poles fought. During the renovation of the mound, in 1981, soil from the battlefields of World War II was deposited at its foot - then the mound was called the Mogiła Mogił. Both during the Second World War and the post-war years, the authorities wanted to destroy the monument, fortunately, it was not possible to do it completely, and the Mound Care Committee watches over its renovation and renovation.
There is a beautiful clearing under the Piłsudski Mound - one of the largest in the Wolski forest - the clearing in Sowiniec. There are benches, a shelter and a playground. The surrounding area also offers numerous picturesque walking and bicycle paths.
